Nesting biology of Centris (Hemisiella) tarsata Smith (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Centridini) Zoologia
Aguiar,Cândida M. L.; Garófalo,Carlos A..
Nests of Centris tarsata Smith, 1874 were obtained from trap-nests in areas of dry semi-deciduous forest (Baixa Grande) and caatinga (Ipirá), in the State of Bahia. Nesting occurred in bamboo canes and in tubes of black cardboard with 5.8 cm (= small tube) and 10.5 cm (= large tube) in length and 0.6 and 0.8 cm in diameter, respectively. In both areas C. tarsata nested during the wet season producing four generations in Baixa Grande and three generations in Ipirá. The immatures of one generation underwent diapause at both sites. The bees constructed their nests with a mixture of sand and oil. In general, the cells were elongated and arranged in linear series with its opening pointing towards the nest entrance. Completed nests had two to three cells in...

New applications of hydroacoustic methods for monitoring shallow water aquatic ecosystems: the case of mussel culture grounds ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Gerlotto, François; Guillard, Joelle; Sanguinede, Fabien; Guennegan, Yvon; Buestel, Dominique.
The development of acoustics tools and methods for monitoring anthropized ecosystems represents a new field for the application of acoustics. Monitoring such an environment was not possible with single vertical echo sounders, due to the fact that the artificial structures and the natural targets were not distinguishable. Monitoring data were collected along the French Mediterranean coastline, during five short surveys of mussel culture longline areas. Both the Reson Seabat 6012 multibeam sonar (455 kHz) and the Simrad SR 240 omnidirectional sonar (23.75 kHz) were used for target detection. The former tools allow accurate allocation of the different types of echoes to artefacts, fish schools and scattered fish. The school characteristics collected included...

Nickel and vanadium contamination of benthic invertebrates following the "Erika" wreck ArchiMer
Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Chauvaud, Laurent; Amouroux, David; Barats, Aurélie; Dufour, Aurélie; Pecheyran, Christophe; Roux, Nathalie.
Levels of nickel and vanadium, trace metals found in high concentration in the oil spilled from the "Erika" tanker off Brittany (France) in December 1999 (41 +/- 1 and 87 +/- 3 mg kg(-1) respectively), have been monitored over a one-year period following this accidental event in several benthic invertebrates. Ni and V in mussels (Mytilus edulis) and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) soft tissues were analysed twice a month by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and a scallop (Pecten maximus) shell daily growth bands were sampled every three bands by laser ablation and analysed by ICP-MS for these two contaminants. Survey data for mollusc tissues were compared with reference data arising from the national monitoring database. Ni concentrations in...

Nível de dano econômico para formigas-cortadeiras em função do índice de produtividade florestal de eucaliptais em uma região de Mata Atlântica Neotropical Entomology
Souza,A; Zanetti,R; Calegario,N.
The production and quality of eucalyptus plantations have been studied in areas with different densities of ant nests, being important to estimate losses caused by leaf-cutting ants. The effects of leaf-cutting ant on wood production in differents productivity sites were studied in eucalyptus plantations in the region of Atlantic Forest, Minas Gerais State, Brazil from 2003 to 2006. Data of plots of the continuous forest inventory and data of leaf-cutting ant monitoring in eucalyptus plantations were obtained. Each unitary increment in the area of Atta spp. nests per hectare reduced the wood production of the eucalyptus forest between 0.04 and 0.13 m³.ha-1, resulting in a level of economic damage for leaf-cutting ants between 13.4 and 39.2 m².ha-1, in this...

No more reason for ignoring gelatinous zooplankton in ecosystem assessment and marine management: Concrete cost-effective methodology during routine fishery trawl surveys ArchiMer
Aubert, A.; Antajan, Elvire; Lynam, C.; Pitois, S.; Pliru, A.; Vaz, Sandrine; Thibault, D..
Gelatinous zooplankton, including cnidarians, ctenophores, and tunicates (appendicularians, pyrosomes, salps and doliolids), are often overlooked by scientific studies, ecosystem assessments and at a management level. Despite the important economic consequences that they can have on human activities and on the marine foodweb, arguments often related to the costs of monitoring or their coordination, or simply negligence, have resulted in the absence of relevant monitoring programs. A cost-effective protocol has been applied on trawling from existing fishery surveys conducted by national laboratories in England and France. The testing phase has successfully demonstrated the adequacy of such a tool to sample macro- and mega-zooplankton gelatinous organisms in...

Noninvasive intracranial pressure monitoring for HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis BJMBR
Bollela,V.R.; Frigieri,G.; Vilar,F.C.; Spavieri Jr,D.L.; Tallarico,F.J.; Tallarico,G.M.; Andrade,R.A.P.; de Haes,T.M.; Takayanagui,O.M.; Catai,A.M.; Mascarenhas,S..
Mortality and adverse neurologic sequelae from HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis (HIV-CM) remains high due to raised intracranial pressure (ICP) complications. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) high opening pressure occurs in more than 50% of HIV-CM patients. Repeated lumbar puncture with CSF drainage and external lumbar drainage might be required in the management of these patients. Usually, there is a high grade of uncertainty and the basis for clinical decisions regarding ICP hypertension tends to be from clinical findings (headache, nausea and vomiting), a low Glasgow coma scale score, and/or fundoscopic papilledema. Significant neurological decline can occur if elevated CSF pressures are inadequately managed. Various treatment strategies to address...

Notes on survey-based spatial indicators for monitoring fish populations ArchiMer
Woillez, Mathieu; Rivoirard, Jacques; Petitgas, Pierre.
This paper presents the spatial indicators used in the European project FISBOAT. These are statistics intended to capture spatial patterns of fish populations, using fish density data collected during scientific surveys. To handle diffuse population limits, indicators are designed not to depend on arbitrary delineation of the domain. They characterize the location (centre of gravity and spatial patches), occupation of space (inertia, isotropy, positive area, spreading area and equivalent area) and microstructure. Collocation between different populations is summarized by a global index of collocation. These spatial indicators have the potential to be used in a monitoring system to detect changes in spatial distribution. They could be helpful for relating...

Optimal Management of Molds in Stored Corn AgEcon
Yigezu, Yigezu A.; Alexander, Corinne E.; Preckel, Paul V..
Long term storage of corn is becoming more common due to the recent increase in the demand for corn by ethanol plants. Infection of maize kernels by toxigenic fungi remains a challenging storage problem despite decades of research. Experts in storage management propose the use of a combination of preventive and monitoring-based responsive strategies in response to mold risks. In this paper, a stochastic dynamic programming model is solved to determine the expected profitability and optimal combination, timing and intensity of the proposed mold management strategies using farmers’ existing infrastructure. The results show that even with relatively high monitoring costs, maintaining high quality grain using a monitoring based optimal mold management strategy...

ORGANIZATIONAL CONSEQUENCES OF EMOTIONAL LABOUR IN MANGENENT AgEcon
Lazanyi, Kornelia.
Emotional labour, as a self-contained field of research, is only three decades old. This study aims to summarize key findings from investigations of the last ten years in an attempt to provide a reference for interpretation of organizational emotions and the organizational aspects of emotional labour. It makes no secret of its aim being to call the attention of anybody dealing with people as workforce that work no longer has only physical or mental aspects, but an emotional dimension as well. Most often this latter dimension lives an independent life. Normally, it is not regulated, tracked, appreciated or rewarded properly, which might send a message to employees that it is not really important. However, emotional labour is a concomitant of most...

Outcome Mapping: A method for tracking behavioural changes in development programs AgEcon
Smutylo, Terry.
Outcome mapping is a methodology for planning, monitoring and evaluating development initiatives that aim to bring about social change. The process of outcome mapping helps a project team or program to be specific about the actors it targets, the changes it expects to see and the strategies it employs. Results are measured in terms of the changes in behaviour, actions or relationships that can be influenced by the team or program. The methodology is comprised of several tools, which can be adapted to different contexts. It enhances team and program understanding of change processes, improves the efficiency of achieving results and promotes realistic and accountable reporting.

Phenology, caudex growth and age estimation of Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin (Cyatheaceae) in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Neumann,Micheline Krüger; Schneider,Paulo Henrique; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro.
Cyathea corcovadensis (Raddi) Domin occurs in northeastern, southeastern and southern Brazil, being widely distributed in the last. This was a three-year study, conducted from August 2008 to July 2011, in which we evaluated C. corcovadensis in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil. For the first year (August 2008 to July 2009), we monitored 30 plants on a monthly basis in order to analyze phenological events (vegetative and reproductive) and caudex growth. We also estimated the ages of the plants. Except in June and July of 2009, monthly leaf emergence and senescence were continuous and irregular, which prevented total leaf abscission, during that first year. Leaf emergence, senescence and fertility correlated with photoperiod, temperature and plant...

Phycotoxin monitoring in France : risk-based strategy and main results (2006-2008) ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine; Amzil, Zouher.
Toxin monitoring is carried out along the coasts of France by a national network, REPHY, which is the National Monitoring Network for Phytoplankton and Phycotoxins. Sampling strategy differs according to the type of zone coastal or offshore and to the family of toxins. For PSP and ASP toxins, monitoring is based on the detection of toxic phytoplankton species. For lipophilic toxins, a systematic analysis of toxins is performed in risk areas during high risk periods. Experimental monitoring for palytoxins has also been conducted along the Mediterranean coast since 2007. The total number of toxin analyses is in the order of 2500 to 3000 per year. The detailed results for each family of toxins showed that the most frequent toxic events for the period from...

Recharge contribution to the Guarani Aquifer System estimated from the water balance method in a representative watershed Anais da ABC (AABC)
Wendland,Edson; Gomes,Luis H.; Troeger,Uwe.
The contribution of recharge to regional groundwater flow systems is essential information required to establish sustainable water resources management. The objective of this work was to determine the groundwater outflow in the Ribeirão da Onça Basin using a water balance model of the saturated soil zone. The basin is located in the outcrop region of the Guarani Aquifer System (GAS). The water balance method involved the determination of direct recharge values, groundwater storage variation and base flow. The direct recharge was determined by the water table fluctuation method (WTF). The base flow was calculated by the hydrograph separation method, which was generated by a rain-flow model supported by biweekly streamflow measurements in the control...

Recommendations on methods for the detection and control of biological pollution in marine coastal waters ArchiMer

Adverse effects of invasive alien species (IAS), or biological pollution, is an increasing problem in marine coastal waters, which remains high on the environmental management agenda. All maritime countries need to assess the size of this problem and consider effective mechanisms to prevent introductions, and if necessary and where possible to monitor, contain, control or eradicate the introduced impacting organisms. Despite this, and in contrast to more enclosed water bodies, the openness of marine systems indicates that once species are in an area then eradication is usually impossible. Most institutions in countries are aware of the problem and have sufficient governance in place for management. However, there is still a general lack of commitment and...
